HLPF 2019 - ICAO EVENT: BRIEFING ON AVIATION CONTRIBUTIONS TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE

BACKGROUND

In September 2015, world leaders adopted "Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development". This ambitious Agenda aims to achieve sustainable development by 2030 in areas of critical importance to humanity and the planet, and the progress towards the 2030 Agenda is being monitored by 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Member States also agreed that the United Nations (UN) High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) will carry out regular reviews of the 2030 Agenda through the 17 SDGs.

In this regard, the ministerial meeting of the HLPF on sustainable development will be held from 16 to 18 July 2019 in New York, United States, under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council. The SDG No. 13 "Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts" is among the set of SDGs that will be reviewed by the HLPF meeting.

ICAO SIDE EVENT

When: Tuesday, 16 July 2019, from 13:15 to 14:30

Where: UN Headquarters, Room F

With a view to showcasing the contribution to the SDG No. 13 and further raising global awareness on how the international aviation sector is addressing the climate change challenge, ICAO will organize a side event during the HLPF entitled "High-level Briefing on Aviation Contributions to the achievement of SDG No. 13 (Climate Action)" on Tuesday, 16 July 2019, from 1315 to 1430 hours at the Conference Room F in the UN Conference Building in New York.

The side event is being organized with representatives from Member States and industry to highlight recent ICAO developments and future opportunities to address emissions from international aviation, by innovative aircraft technologies, operational improvements and green airports, sustainable aviation fuels, and the global market-based measure, as well as capacity building and assistance for implementation.

This ICAO side event will also pave the way for the upcoming UN Climate Summit to be held on 23 September 2019 in New York, prior to the opening of the 40th session of the ICAO Assembly, where the Organization will have another opportunity to share its efforts and a clear plan for contributing to the global challenge to boost the ambition and accelerate actions to tackle climate change.
