With aviation being both an enabler of economic growth and a contributor to environmental challenges, this pillar focuses on aligning the sector with global sustainability goals. This includes the Long-Term Aspirational Goal on CO2 Emissions (LTAG), which will benefit from the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), the implementation of CORSIA, and from operational and technological advancements.
Key challenges include limited participation in CORSIA and obstacles in becoming a global leader in SAF production, due to insufficient policies, infrastructure gaps, and reduced public-private partnerships. Despite these barriers, the SAM region holds immense potential to lead. Aspirations include increasing State participation in CORSIA, developing robust regulations for SAF production, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, and building the necessary infrastructure to support sustainable growth.
Providing information and raising awareness to State authorities and the private sector about the opportunities for developing sustainable projects can drive effective measures to promote policies, encourage research, and stimulate the use of renewable energy and SAF. It also should highlight the economic potential of sustainability, including education, job creation, and enhanced regional competitiveness.
By bringing together State entities, industry, and academic institutions, this guideline aims to ensure that resources and expertise are aligned to address sustainability priorities. Strengthening partnerships through structured mechanisms, such as State-Industry roundtables, can significantly enhance the Region's ability to implement innovative solutions with lower costs in the deployment of studies, policies, regulations, and projects.
The advancement of sustainable aviation depends on policies and regulations that incentivize the production and adoption of sustainable fuels, operational improvements, and green technologies, along with compensation initiatives aligned with CORSIA. Furthermore, the Region should leverage funding mechanisms that bridge the gap between sustainable projects in aviation and financial institutions.
The ICAO-Airbus SAF Project develops a roadmap for sustainable fuels, fostering collaboration, reducing emissions, and positioning Argentina as a regional aviation sustainability leader.
