Projects

Fly Green Fund

Objective

To create scale, bridge the current premium for sustainable biojet fuels and to enable investments in the development of sustainable bio-jet fuel production from forestry residues and waste in the Nordic region.

Description

The Fly Green Fund is a non-profit organisation and a corporate sustainable biojet fuel programme. It was launched in 2014 by its founders SkyNRG, Karlstad Airport and Nordic Initiative for Sustainable Aviation (NISA) and is supported by Swedavia (a Swedish state-owned airport operator) and the Swedish Regional Airport Association. Through this synergy, the partnership aims to generate funds to help airlines buy and use sustainable biojet fuels for flights on a regular basis, as well as support development of local supply chain projects based on local feedstocks. 75% of the foundation’s money will be used to pay the additional cost for bio jet fuel in comparison with fossil jet fuel. 25% of the funds will be used to support supply chain projects, market development, knowledge sharing and research of local production.

The Fly Green Fund is not limited to particular airlines or other stakeholders from the aviation industry, as it offers all consumers and companies the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint from air travel by the use of sustainable biojet fuels. The Fly Green Fund does specifically invest in the development of sustainable aviation fuels supply chains in the Nordic region. The fund is currently supporting three projects:

  1. Luleå University of Technology | A preparatory study for production bio jet fuel from Swedish forest–based residues through gasification followed by Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis.
  2. Forestry-2-Jet | A project managed by RISE (a Swedish state-owned research institute) looking at converting ethanol produced from forest residues into jet fuel.
  3. Electro fuel | Big scale production of electro fuel for aviation from CO2 extracted from Jämtkraft’s heat and power station: A project managed by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute.
Partners

Partners of the Fly Green Fund include Karlstad Airport, SkyNRG, Nordic Initiative for Sustainable Aviation (NISA), Swedavia, and Swedish Regional Airport Association.

Achievements to date

March 2014: Kick-off of Fly Green Fund

Since launch, the Fly Green Fund has raised over 4,2 million USD and has supplied over 1.845 metric tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel to Swedish airports.
