Progress on ICAO’s Strategic Objectives and Global Plans — Safety — Health and aviation medicine

Health and aviation medicine

The Mental Health Working Group (MHWG) of the Medical Provisions Study Group (MPSG) reviewed the Electronic Bulletin on Mental Health published in November 2020 (EB 2020/55), which did not need further amendments. The MHWG developed additional guidance regarding the psychological and psychiatric assessment of pilots for fitness to fly following COVID-19 infection, which was published in an electronic bulletin in January 2022. In addition, the MHWG reviewed the ICAO Mental Health Framework published in the Manual of Civil Aviation Medicine (Doc 8984), the latest edition of which is scheduled for publication in the second half of 2022.

The Aviation Medicine Certification Working Group developed guidance relating to safety considerations for vaccinated aviation workers, which was published in the Manual on COVID-19 Cross-border Risk Management (Doc 10152). The Working Group also reviewed the previous Quick Reference Guidance (QRG) supporting States’ decision-making on medical certification practices, replacing it with a targeted alleviation (TA) to extend the validity of medical assessment certificates until States can return to normal medical certification processes. In addition, the Working Group developed guidance on medical re-certification after COVID-19 infection, which was published via electronic bulletin in January 2022.
