Progress on ICAO’s Strategic Objectives and Global Plans — Safety — Accident investigation

Accident investigation

The Accident Investigation Panel (AIGP) and Flight Recorder Specific Working Group (FLIRECSWG) supported the work programme of the Accident Investigation Section through remote meetings and working group teleconferences. Support initiatives were set up so that accident investigation authorities (AIAs) could explore ways of fulfilling their responsibilities under Annex 13 — Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation, despite COVID-19 restrictions.

Accident involving Ukraine International Airlines flight PS-752 on 8 January 2020 in the Islamic Republic of Iran

A team of advisors from ICAO supported the investigation of the accident involving Ukraine International Airlines flight PS-752 on 8 January 2020. The final report was sent to accredited States on 15 March 2021, two days prior to its publication on 17 March 2021, so that States could prepare for press conferences and meetings with victims’ families. In response to the downing of flight PS-752, the Government of Canada established the Safer Skies Initiative to improve the safety of air travel worldwide by addressing gaps in conflict zone management in civil aviation.
