Regional Coordination
Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) have become powerful tools for innovation, economic growth, and humanitarian impact. Yet across the world, many States still lack a clear understanding of existing regulatory frameworks to safely integrate these operations into their airspace. The absence of harmonized processes for regulatory approvals has real consequences.
Recognizing this global need, ICAO launched a series of dedicated initiatives to help States build the foundations for safe, efficient, and globally harmonized UAS/RPAS operations. Supported by ICAO Regional Offices and in alignment with Member States’ priorities, these workshops and engagements aim to:
- Strengthen national understanding of UAS/RPAS regulatory concepts
- Promote the applicability of ICAO SARPs and guidance material
- Offer practical pathways for implementation
- Encourage dialogue between regulators, industry, humanitarian actors, and civil aviation authorities
- Help States move from uncertainty to capability — and from capability to safe, operational reality.
