ICAO provides an introductory course for those doctors who are, or who wish to become, designated medical examiners (DMEs) of pilots and traffic controllers. The on-line course is free of charge (although registration is necessary) and takes about two hours. A certificate of successful completion is provided to those who obtain a satisfactory score in the final test (which is not compulsory), but the certificate is not recognised as adequate training for those who wish to become DMEs, for which more extensive training and experience is necessary. Although intended primarily for medical examiners, the course may be of interest to anyone who wishes to learn more about civilian aviation medicine.
