The Regions of North America, the Caribbean and South America are those which aviation recovers the fastest worldwide. After a pandemic that substantially reduced aviation activities, but that also underlined the importance of civil aviation for the sustainable development of States, the significant increase in air operations leads us to ensure the proper promotion and management of the safety of operations.
| Las Regiones de Norteamérica, Caribe y Sudamérica son aquellas cuya aviación se recupera más rápidamente en todo el mundo. Tras una pandemia que redujo sustancialmente las actividades aéreas, pero que también subrayó la importancia de la aviación civil para el desarrollo sostenible de los Estados, el incremento significativo de las operaciones aéreas nos conlleva a asegurar la debida promoción y gestión a la seguridad de las operaciones.

In this sense, and to reactivate the awareness and interest of all those involved in maintaining and raising safety levels, the NACC and SAM Regional Offices announced an initiative to promote the Safety Awareness Week for the Americas (SCSO-Americas) and the promotion of the aviation security culture in the NAM/CAR/SAM CAAs and the entire aeronautical industry for the Americas. These events are to be held in the week of 4 to 10 December 2022, with the expectation of the participation of the main actors of the sector in these regions. During that week, it is expected to carry out various activities known in some States and also in other labour sectors as Stand Down, which are voluntary activities by employers to deal directly with their employees on safety issues.
| En este sentido, y para reactivar la conciencia y el interés de todas las partes involucradas en mantener y elevar los niveles de seguridad operacional, nos es grato anunciar una iniciativa de promover la Semana de Concienciación sobre la Seguridad Operacional para las Américas (SCSO-Américas) y la promoción de la cultura de seguridad de la aviación en las AAC y toda la industria aeronáutica para las Américas, que se llevará a cabo en la semana del 4 al 10 de diciembre de 2022, con la expectativa de participación de los principales actores del sector en estas regiones. Durante esa semana, se espera realizar diversas actividades conocidas en algunos Estados y también en otros sectores laborales como Stand Down, que son actividades voluntarias por parte de los empleadores para tratar directamente con sus empleados/as sobre temas de seguridad operacional.

All civil aviation stakeholders, as integral part of the aviation industry are suggested to become part of this initiative, with talks, courses or webinars on safety, video presentations, provision of guidance material and other activities that increase awareness of how safety management is handled on broad issues, but also on specific issues of interest to those actors in the sector.
| Se sugiere que los Centros de Instrucción, como parte integral de la industria de la aviación, se hagan parte de esta iniciativa, con la realización de conversatorios, cursos o webinarios sobreen seguridad operacional, presentación de videos, suministro de material de orientación y otras actividades que aumenten la conciencia sobre cómo se maneja la gestión de la seguridad operacional en general, pero también en asuntos específicos de interés para esos actores del sector.

As the International Civil Aviation Day is celebrated on 7 December, convening the Awareness Week will have a high impact and great representativeness for the NAM/CAR/SAM Regions. ICAO, through the NACC and SAM Regional Offices, in support of this initiative, will provide content on safety during that week, which the States will be able to use as a complement to the activities that are expected to be carried out by the actors in the sector. These contents will be provided on their websites, through links to reading materials, educational material, and audio visuals for use during SCSO-Americas. In addition, virtual talks of a maximum of one hour will be held daily, where employers will be able to encourage their staff to assist them, if it suits them.
| Como el 7 de diciembre se celebra el Día internacional de la aviación civil, la realización de la Semana de Concienciación será de alto impacto y gran representatividad para las Regiones NAM/CAR/SAM. La OACI, por medio de las Oficinas Regionales NACC y SAM, en apoyo a esta iniciativa facilitará contenidos sobre seguridad operacional durante esa semana, de los cuales los Estados podrán hacer uso en complemento a las actividades que se esperan sean realizadas por los actores del sector. Estos contenidos se estarán facilitando en sus sitios web, mediante enlaces para materiales de lectura, material educativo y audiovisuales para uso durante la SCSO-Américas. Además, serán realizadas diariamente charlas virtuales de máximo una hora, donde los empleadores podrán estimular que su personal pueda asistirlos, si les parece adecuado.

For instance, the expectation of airlines, authorities, service providers, etc., could be:
- a safety chief providing a talk to the pilots about crew rest, human factors, or negative trends that are being noticed internally,
- a talk from the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) about their organization’s commitment to establishing, strengthening and maintaining the safety culture from the highest levels of the organization.
- In a Maintenance centre, it can be a talk about tool control to ensure that no tool is left where people were working.
- Safety awareness issues can be found in all branches and awareness of them is the obligation of all of us.
| Por ejemplo, en las aerolíneas, autoridades, proveedores de servicios, etc, se espera que:
- un/a jefe/a de seguridad pueda dar dando una charla a los pilotos sobre descanso de tripulaciones, factores humanos, o tendencias negativas que se están notando internamente,
- una charla del/de la Director/a Ejecutivo/a (CEO) sobre el compromiso de su organización con establecer fortalecer y mantener la cultura de seguridad desde los niveles más altos de la organización.
- En un Centro de Mantenimiento puede ser una charla sobre control de herramientas para asegurar que no quede una herramienta en donde se estaba trabajando.
- Se pueden encontrar temas de concienciación de seguridad operacional en todas las ramas y su concientización es obligación de todos nosotros.

CAAs, training centres, operators, and service providers, as well as International Organizations such as ACI, ALTA, CANSO, IATA, and the industry such as Airbus, Boeing Embraer, and other collaborators have webinars or instructions on their platforms. The Regional Offices will try to have links on NACC and SAM Regional Offices websites. As such, the training centres are invited to send us links to support this initiative.

The civil aviation stakeholders in the NAM/CAR/SAM Regions are invited to inform the Secretariat about the achievements in this effort within their institutions.
