Celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Chicago Convention at ICAO’s Paris Office - 4 December 2024

On December 4th, 2024, the Paris Office of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention). This milestone was not just a celebration of ICAO's achievements but also a tribute to the visionaries who foresaw the transformative power of civil aviation. During the celebrations, speakers representing ICAO, States and international organizations delivered speeches.

The Regional Director, Mr. Nicolas Rallo, opened the ceremony and reminded the audience that civil aviation has become an integral part of our world, connecting people, cultures, and economies. It has facilitated international trade, tourism, and cultural exchange, contributing significantly to global economic growth and development.

During the celebrations, it was highlighted that the Chicago Convention was signed by 52 nations and set the foundation for international cooperation in aviation. ICAO's mission has always been to promote the safe and orderly development of international civil aviation, ensuring that it operates in a manner that is safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable.

Over the past 80 years, ICAO has played a crucial role in shaping the global aviation landscape. It has developed international standards and policies that help ensure the safety, security, efficiency and sustainability of air travel. The speakers highlighted and commended the organization's work that has been instrumental in fostering international cooperation and collaboration amongst Member States, international/regional organizations and industry stakeholders.

As we celebrate ICAO's 80th anniversary, it is important to reflect on the achievements of the past and look forward to the future of civil aviation. The Regional Director introduced the six strategic goals under the newly approved Strategic Plan of ICAO that will guide the organization through 2050. The theme of the anniversary celebrations, "Safe Skies. Sustainable Future: Together for the next 80 years," underscores the ongoing commitment to ensuring that aviation continues to be a force for good in the world.
