Commercial Flights

Return to the ICAO GFAAF Homepage

Alternative fuels have been used onboard aircraft for many years, including regular use onboard commercial flights since 2016, when both Oslo Airport and United Airlines (departures from Los Angeles International Airport) started accepting deliveries of alternative fuel on a regular basis.

Since 2016, airline and airport interest in alternative fuels has continued to increase, with more airports receiving deliveries of alternative fuel every year. Details of these deliveries can be found on ICAO's Airport Use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel map. While it is not possible to determine the quantity of alternative fuel used onboard specific aircraft due to fuel blending procedures, ICAO has a live-feed that tracks aircraft based on publically available information from airports and airlines involved in on-going alternative fuel purchase agreements. More details on this live-feed are available on the GFAAF homepage.

Based on publically available information on the flights using alternative fuels, the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) maintains a daily count of flights that have used alternative fuel* since 2011.
