The ICEC is the only internationally approved tool to estimate carbon emissions from air travel.
Developed by international experts under ICAO’s Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP), the ICAO Carbon Emissions Calculator (ICEC) applies a globally harmonized methodology to calculate CO2 emissions from air travel. The methodology applies the best available industry data to account for various factors such as aircraft types, route-specific data, passenger load factors and cargo carried. Accessible via a web portal and Application Programming Interface (API), ICEC turns complex emissions data into clear, usable information for all users.
ICEC (2026 version) calculates CO₂ emissions across four cabin classes: Economy, Premium Economy, Business, and First.
It provides CO2 emissions estimates for both passenger and freighter operations, supporting users in assessing and reporting their environmental impact. The methodology has been refined to improve usability, including enhanced estimates for airport pairs with limited data, minimizing user input while maximizing accuracy.
