Progress on ICAO's Strategic Objectives — Environmental Protection — Cooperation with other United Nations Bodies on Environment

Cooperation with other United Nations Bodies on Environment

ICAO participated in preparatory events and meetings leading up to the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference, with a view to highlighting ICAO developments and maintaining ICAO’s leadership on international aviation and climate change.

In July, the United Nations (UN) Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) organized a webinar entitled “Sustainable Transport and COVID-19: Response and Recovery”. ICAO participated in this event, highlighting that the pandemic crisis could represent an opportunity to accelerate.

At the International Renewal Energy Agency (IRENA) Innovation Week, ICAO emphasized the need for international collaboration in decarbonising the aviation industry, and ICAO’s leading role on all matters related to international aviation.

In November the UN High-Level Climate Champions led the organization of the Race to Zero Dialogues and Race to Zero Campaign to mobilize leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions, investors and civil society for a healthy, resilient and zero carbon recovery. ICAO collaborated with the Climate Champions, the International Transport Forum (ITF), and the World Economic Forum (WEF) in the organization of a climate dialogue event focused on the transport area.

Cooperation with UN Environment continued on various environmental topics, including ICAO’s contribution to UN Carbon Neutrality and Sustainability Management through the ICAO Carbon Emissions Calculator (ICEC).

ICAO cooperated with the UN Environmental Management Group (EMG), with a view to enhancing recognition and maintaining ICAO’s continued leadership in addressing all environmental matters related to international aviation.

ICAO also enhanced cooperation with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for the activities on climate change observations and adaptation measures, and the UN Logistics Cluster, through the World Food Programme (WFP), to address CO2 emissions from global humanitarian logistics activities. ICAO also initiated a dialogue with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), to exchange information on existing activities, technologies and arrangements related to aviation forest fire fighting.
