PT/EAST/21 of METG - 31 May to 1 June 2023, virtual

The Twenty-first Meeting of the Project Team on Implementation of Meteorological Services in the Eastern Part of the EUR Region (PT/EAST/21) of the Meteorology Group (METG) was held virtually from 31 May to 1 June 2023. The meeting was attended by ninety-five (95) participants from nine (9) States and ICAO.

Weather information exchanged in the ICAO Meteorological Information Exchange Model (IWXXM) is necessary for System Wide Information Management (SWIM) services, which will allow operators to retrieve weather, aeronautical information, etc. catered for their flights. Efforts are being made in States to implement extended AMHS in order to exchange weather data in IWXXM format. In the meantime, Regional OPMET Centre (ROC) Moscow provides States in the area of responsibility of ROC Moscow a translation service so that this data is available in the format needed to provide SWIM services.

Other topics reviewed and discussed included expanding SIGMET coordination to ensure the harmonization of hazardous weather information on the Flight Information Region (FIR) boundaries, verification of meteorological forecasts, expanding the Doppler radar network where data is used to provide hazardous information (e.g. horizontal and vertical wind shear, turbulence, icing) to stakeholders to optimize the safety and efficiency of flight, and developments related to the Chinese-Russian Consortium (CRC) space weather centre.

The next PT/EAST meeting is expected to be held in person in spring 2024.
