PT/EAST/20 of METG - 29 to 30 June 2022, virtual

The Twentieth Meeting of the Project Team on Implementation of Meteorological Services in the Eastern Part of the EUR Region (PT/EAST/20) of the Meteorology Group (METG) was held virtually from 29 to 30 June 2022. The meeting was attended by fifty-seven (57) participants from ten (10) States and ICAO.

SIGMET coordination in accordance to Annex 3 and ICAO EUR Doc 014 is necessary to reduce hazardous weather information discontinuities on the borders of Flight Information Regions (FIR) and improve this service for operators used in flight planning and tactical decision-making. Currently, there are 10 such agreements in the PT/EAST States and 3 more expected in the near future.

On-going tasks to improve aerodrome forecasts include improving Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) by utilizing aircraft weather observations, expanding the Doppler radar network, conducting TAF verification and training. Improvements to aerodrome forecasts mainly assists operators in flight planning.

Weather information exchanged in the ICAO Meteorological Information Exchange Model (IWXXM) is necessary for System Wide Information Management (SWIM) services, which will allow for operators to retrieve weather, aeronautical information, etc. catered for their flights. Efforts are being made in States to implement extended AMHS in order to exchange weather data in IWXXM format. In the meantime, Regional OPMET Centre (ROC) Moscow provides States in the area of responsibility of ROC Moscow a translation service so that this data is available in the format needed to provide SWIM services.

The next PT/EAST meeting is expected to be held in person by early summer 2023.
