The ICAO 2023 ENV Task Force meeting - 21 March 2023

The ICAO 2023 Environment (ENV) Task Force meeting was held virtually on 21 March 2023. Representatives from 33 States from the ICAO EUR/NAT area as well as representatives from partner Regional Organizations (ACAO, ACI Europe, ECAC and EUROCONTROL) attended the meeting.

The discussions focused on initiatives undertaken to address aviation CO2 emissions reduction. The recently adopted Assembly Resolution on a long-term global aspirational goal of net-zero CO2 emissions from international aviation by 2050 marks the start of a new journey for aviation. States were invited to work closely with ICAO to optimize progress on the implementation of CO2 emissions reduction measures.

The Secretariat provided insights on related ICAO initiatives, the latest updates on the States' Action Plans initiative and CORSIA and other relevant capacity building activities including the Sustainable Aviation Fuels "ACT SAF" programme.

States' Focal Points and Representatives from Azerbaijan, France, The Netherlands and Switzerland presented various initiatives that contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions such as the CO2 ceiling, Air Traffic Management measures, Sustainable Aviation Fuels monitoring tool, operational measures (New Tactical Time of Arrival), aircraft technologies, etc. All these measures can be included in the States' Action Plans to address the reduction of CO2 emissions from international aviation. Moreover, partner Regional Organizations' Representatives provided updated information on the initiatives, mitigation measures and studies undertaken to support aviation's decarbonisation (Policy Guidance for Sustainable Aviation Fuels, Airport Carbon Accreditation, Study on the role of ATM to reduce costs of decarbonisation, etc.). The ICAO 2023 Environment Task Force presentations are available on the ICAO website here.

The ICAO EUR/NAT Office provides implementation support to States through various means, including the ENV Task Force, ACT-CORSIA and ACT-SAF.
