The Thirty-Ninth Meeting of the Data Management Group (DMG/39) of the Meteorology Group (METG) was held at the Agencia Estatal de Meteorologia (AEMET) in Madrid from 13 to 15 June 2023. Ten participants from Algeria, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Romania, Russian Federation, Spain, the United Kingdom and ICAO contributed to the following:

  • Agreed to propose to the Thirty-Third Meeting of the Meteorology Group (METG/33) to extend Traditional Alphanumeric Code (TAC) to ICAO Meteorological Information Exchange Model (IWXXM) translation services from the associated Region OPMET Centres (ROC);
    • Twenty-one States in the EUR Region still rely on these services and DMG will propose to METG/33 (subject to approval by EASPG/5) to add States to the list of air navigation deficiencies in the EUR Region if IWXXM is not provided by the State by EASPG/5 (28 November – 1 December 2023);

  • Reviewed the OPMET data available in IWXXM on SADIS by Region that revealed this data is available from the EUR & NAT Regions, MID Region and APAC Region. Other inter-regional coordination (NAM, CAR, SAM and AFI) is necessary with the objective to have OPMET data in IWXXM format available to operators from anywhere in the world in order to take advantage of new System Wide Information Management (SWIM) services; and

  • Agreed to draft and submit eight working papers to the METG/33, which involves a range of subjects such as updates to the EUR OPMET Data Management Handbook (EUR Doc 018) and the Volcanic Ash Contingency Plan for the EUR and NAT Regions (EUR Doc 019/ NAT Doc 006, Part II), special air-report monitoring, implementation of the Aviation System Block Upgrade (ASBU) thread elements AMET B0 and B1, IWXXM translation service agreement extension, status of IWXXM implementation in the EUR Region, DMG warning monitoring and the general DMG Report.

Other topics discussed included automating the process of changing meteorological bulletins (and/or their contents) as well as reviewed SWIM developments from the Meteorology Panel (METP) Working Group on Meteorological Information Exchange (WG-MIE) and other relevant groups and States.

DMG/40 will be held from 17 to 19 October 2023 in virtual mode.
