DMG/35 video conference calls – 15 to 17 March 2022

The Data Management Group (DMG) of the Meteorology Group (METG) conducted DMG/35 through a series of 6 video conference calls from 15 to 17 March 2022. Participants from Algeria, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Romania, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and ICAO contributed to the following:

  • Reviewed the implementation of required OPMET data as per the EUR Air Navigation Plan based on February 2022 OPMET monitoring which contributes to measuring the implementation of ASBU B0-AMET;

    • Initial analysis shows an improvement to METAR availability (up 10% from the last year) and METAR timeliness (up 8 % from the last year) as well as TAF timeliness (up 10% from the last year) and a slight drop in the TAF availability (down 2% from the last year) yielding an overall improvement to the implementation of ASBU B0-AMET from 90 to 93% in the last year;

  • Review of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Task Team on Aviation Data (TT-AvData) and in particular to the new version naming applied to changes to the ICAO Meteorological Information Exchange Model (IWXXM) schema and related efforts made to synchronize these schema releases with the applicability date of ICAO Annex 3;

  • Coordination on the inter-regional exchange of OPMET data in IWXXM format is being planned or continuing (e.g. EUR and APAC) with Inter-Regional OPMET Gateways (IROG)s noting that there are bandwidth issues that need to be addressed and there is a dependency on AMHS implementation for some COM centres;

  • Progress on the implementation of Regional OPMET Centre (ROC) Moscow with a focus on the exchange of OPMET data with ROCs London and Toulouse expected to be completed in Quarter 2 of 2022;

  • Review proposals on updating EUR Doc 018, EUR OPMET Data Management Handbook, and in particular to conforming to ICAO Annex 3 on the use of some terminology and the cancelling of TAF; clarification on the use of SPECI; inclusion of procedure on monitoring IWXXM data that is under construction; and finalizing the back-up procedures of the ROCs; and

Congratulations to the newly elected Chair of DMG, Wim Demol of Skeyes, Belgium, and the newly elected Vice Chair of DMG, Michael Pichler of Austrocontrol, Austria.
