ICAO will hold the Tenth Symposium and Exhibition on Machine Readable Travel Documents (MRTDs), Biometrics and Border Security from 7 to 9 October 2014. A select group of Industry Partners will complement the Symposium, showcasing a broad range of products and services related to MRTDs, biometric identification, travel document security applications and border management systems.
This global annual event will address ICAO MRTD standards and specifications, identification management best practices and related border security issues. In addition, the Symposium will provide an overview of milestones in moving from the early MRTD specifications to a coherent ICAO policy framework on holistic traveller identification management - the ICAO Traveller Identification Programme (ICAO TRIP).
The special feature of the 2014 Symposium is focus on border integrity and border control management. The Symposium agenda will explore Inspection Systems and Tools, and Interoperable Applications that enhance security and facilitation benefits to Member States, with particular reference to their use in combatting terrorism and trans-border crime. Watch lists, passport readers and border information systems, the ICAO PKD, intelligence-led border controls, inter-agency and cross-border information sharing will be examined in some detail.
In addition, the foundations of holistic traveller identification management will be explored, including why having a robust national identification management system is a pre-condition for security and facilitation benefits provided by ICAO-compliant MRTDs, eMRTDs and modern border control systems.
The Symposium will explore the integrity of passport issuance process. Document Issuance and Control, a component of the ICAO TRIP Strategy, offers concepts and good practices in preventing the fraudulent use of MRTDs by individuals who are not entitled to them. It includes processes to ensure integrity of document issuance by appropriate authorities to authorized holders, and controls to prevent theft, tampering and loss.
The 2014 Symposium follows last year's successful event, attended by over 500 participants from States, international organizations, companies and other institutions, and it will take place at ICAO Headquarters, 999 University Street, Montréal, Quebec, Canada. The Symposium programme will be posted on this website as soon as it is available and will be continually updated.
The presentations and handouts will be available in English only. Simultaneous interpretation will be available in English, French, Spanish and Russian.
Symposium speakers and facilitators include world leaders in the field, policy makers and senior managers, top experts, practitioners and researchers, many from the relevant working groups of ICAO, ISO and other international organizations.
Who should attend
The Symposium will be of particular interest to government officials from national identification and travel document issuance authorities, passport offices, immigration, customs, police and other border inspection and law enforcement agencies; Ministries of Interior and Foreign Affairs, as well as embassy and consular staff. Other key stakeholders include international organizations, donor agencies, private companies offering technologies and products for effective international identity and border management, airlines and airport authorities, security and facilitation consultants, academia and think tanks.
