ICAO addresses COP28 High-level Roundtable on Energy transition

Montréal and Dubai, 6 December 2023 – ICAO addressed the COP28 Presidency Roundtable on Energy transition this past weekend in Dubai where it informed the leaders in attendance on the outcome of the recently concluded third ICAO Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3), particularly the adoption of an ICAO Global Framework for Aviation Cleaner Energies.

“The adoption of this Framework sends a clear signal to the international community on the continued leadership of ICAO in addressing emissions from international aviation. ICAO remains fully committed in leading the sector’s efforts towards supporting the temperature goal of the Paris Agreement,” expressed ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano in his remarks to the high-level meeting.

Through the Framework, ICAO and its Member States strive to achieve a collective global aspirational Vision to reduce international aviation CO2 emissions by 5 per cent by 2030, through use of aviation cleaner energies, such as Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and Lower Carbon Aviation Fuels (LCAF).

President Sciacchitano further explained to participants that the Framework outlines concrete steps to facilitate financing and provides clarity, consistency and predictability to governments, public and private investors, industry and fuel producers, on policies, regulations, implementation needs, and investments required to scale up the development, production and deployment of aviation cleaner energies.

About ICAO

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is a United Nations agency which helps 193 countries to cooperate together and share their skies to their mutual benefit.

Since it was established in 1944, ICAO’s support and coordination has helped countries to diplomatically and technically realize a uniquely rapid and dependable network of global air mobility, connecting families, cultures, and businesses all over the world, and promoting sustainable growth and socio-economic prosperity wherever aircraft fly.

As it enters a new era of digitization, and of incredible new flight and propulsion innovations, air transport is relying more than ever on ICAO’s expert support and technical and diplomatic guidance to help chart a new and exciting future for international flight. ICAO is innovating itself to answer this call, and expanding its partnerships among UN and technical stakeholders to deliver a strategic global vision and effective, sustainable solutions.
