Background and Context

The global call to accelerate the shift towards climate-driven action has increasingly gained momentum since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, with significant focus being placed on how the global community can build back better, coupled with a significant growth in the aspirations for a green aviation recovery.

In fact, the expectations to decarbonise transport have been highlighted in the numerous UN events related to COVID-19 recovery, and with the UNSG providing the “Six Climate-related Actions to Shape COVID-19 Recovery”, all of which referring to a green recovery.

The aviation industry has been dramatically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Some States came to rescue their aviation stakeholders, and financial support has been provided, often linked to strong green commitments, paving the way for a green recovery of aviation. Although this period has been extremely challenging, it represents a unique opportunity to trigger the shift towards a deep decarbonisation of aviation system.

The 100 innovative in-sector CO2 reduction solutions presented at the recent ICAO Stocktaking Seminar (8-11 September 2020) have demonstrated that achieving up to zero-net aviation emissions would be possible if necessary conditions are met, but that would not be without challenges that go far beyond the aviation sector itself. The ICAO Aviation Recovery Seminar will address the challenges within the sector to achieve more ambitious goals and how to ensure that key players beyond the aviation sector can deliver on the basic conditions needed for the building back better.
