Cabin Safety

ICAO Annexes contain Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) adopted by the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization as the minimum Standards applicable to international civil aviation. The Annexes below comprise SARPs related to cabin safety.


Annex 6 — Operation of Aircraft, Part I — International Commercial Air Transport — Aeroplanes presents Standards and Recommended Practices related to: 
 

    • The operator’s in-flight procedures
    • Passenger safety
    • Carry-on baggage
    • The minimum number of cabin crew required for each type of aeroplane
    • The assignment of cabin crew members’ emergency duties
    • Cabin crew at emergency evacuation stations
    • The protection of cabin crew during flight
    • Cabin crew training programmes
    • Equipment required on board aeroplanes
    • Cabin crew members’ fatigue management
    • Security-related procedures and security training programmes (for the prevention of illicit acts     against civil aviation)

Annex 8 — Airworthiness of Aircraft presents Standards and Recommended Practices related to:


    • Design and manufacturing of the aircraft cabin and the protection of its occupants
    • Systems design features
    • The operating environment and human factors, including ergonomics
    • Crashworthiness and cabin safety, including: 
        • Design emergency landing loads
        • Cabin fire protection
        • Evacuation
        • Lighting and marking
        • Survival equipment
        • Security-related design aspects of the cabin

Annex 13 — Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation presents Standards and Recommended Practices related to:

    • The organization and conduct of an investigation
    • Investing accidents, including turbulence-related occurrences resulting in serious injury
    • Examples of serious incidents that should be investigated, including those related to cabin safety

 

Annex 18 — The Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air and the ICAO Doc 9284 — Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air present Standards and Recommended Practices related to:

  
    • The classification of dangerous goods
    • The limitation on the transport of dangerous goods by air
    • Labeling and marking
    • The operator’s responsibilities
    • Information and instructions to flight crew members
    • Information to passengers
    • The establishment of dangerous goods training for cabin crew members


Annex 19 — Safety Management presents SMS requirements applicable to operators of aeroplanes authorized to conduct international commercial air transport in accordance with Annex 6 Part I.
