Emerging Aviation Issues — Increased use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS)

Increased use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS)

ICAO assistance in developing a harmonized regulatory framework is being undertaken through DRONE ENABLE, ICAO’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Industry Symposia. The 2019 symposium was held in Montréal, Canada from 12 to 14 November 2019 and was attended by over 400 participants. Additionally, ICAO continued to develop a global baseline of guidance material to facilitate harmonization of regulations on UAS that remain outside of the international instrument flight rules (IFR) framework. In particular, the Organization developed Model UAS regulations; guidance on UAS for Humanitarian Aid and Emergency Response; and UAS Traffic Management (UTM) guidance.

Amendment proposals on C2 Link and on airworthiness of remotely piloted aeroplanes, remotely piloted helicopters and remote pilot stations are currently in the consultation phase.
