Global Priorities — All Strategic Objectives — Training and Capacity-building — Upset Prevention and Recovery Training

Upset Prevention and Recovery Training

In an ultra-safe industry, the loss of control in flight (LOC-I) type of accident may be rare but on average it accounts for 25 per cent of all fatalities in scheduled commercial air transport. This has made LOC-I one of ICAO’s top safety priorities, along with controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) and runway safety. To mitigate the risk of LOC-I, Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) for upset prevention and recovery training (UPRT) have been introduced in Annex 1 — Personnel Licensing and Annex 6 — Operation of Aircraft, Part I, for aeroplane pilots. To provide guidance on the implementation of UPRT, regional workshops were conducted in China, Ethiopia, France, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Singapore and Turkey.
