UN Secretary-General commends ICAO’s sustainability initiatives

Montréal, 19 September 2016 – A week before ICAO is to host world governments at its 39th Assembly, which will be a key opportunity for progress on ensuring the continued sustainability of international civil aviation, ICAO’s Council President, Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu and Secretary General, Fang Liu met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, on the occasion of a bilateral meeting to exchange view on ICAO’s  key initiatives.

The ICAO Assembly, at which 191 member States will be discussing and deciding on a major piece of ICAO’s proposed strategy for achieving carbon neutral growth and a number of other  environment- related objectives, will be taking place 27 September to 7 October. It will be preceded by the ICAO World Aviation Forum, which is taking place on 26 September under the theme of “Aviation Partnerships for Sustainable Development.” ICAO’s leadership had the opportunity to illustrate their perspectives on both events.

UN Secretary-General was appreciative of ICAO’s efforts through its No Country Left Behind initiative to assist States in the implementation of ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs), a critical aspect of the sustainability of the international civil aviation network.

The meeting, which took place on 17 September, additionally touched upon aviation safety, security and other emerging issues.
