Progress on ICAO's Strategic Objectives — Environmental Protection — SARPs and Guidance Material

SARPs and Guidance Material

In March, the Council adopted the aeroplane CO2 emissions certification Standard. This new Standard, as the first global design Standard for CO2 emissions of any sector, will apply to new aeroplane-type designs from 2020 and to aeroplane-type designs that are already in-production in 2023. If an in-production aeroplane design is changed at a time beyond 2023, the aeroplane will have to comply with the Standard. In 2028, a production cut-off will apply, meaning that in-production aeroplanes that do not meet the Standard from 2028 can no longer be produced, unless the designs are modified to meet with the Standard. The CO2 emissions Standard was adopted as a new Volume III of Annex 16 to the Chicago Convention.

The ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) Steering Group (SG) meeting was held in September. The CAEP SG meeting discussed issues related to aircraft emissions; aircraft noise; alternative fuels; airports and operations; Impacts and Science, the Integrated Independent Expert Technology Goals Assessment and Review for Engines and Aircraft; and issues associated with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).

The CAEP SG meeting reviewed the continuing work on the development of a new ICAO non-volatile PM (nvPM) Standard. The meeting endorsed the nvPM metric systems for Landing and Takeoff (LTO) nvPM mass and number emissions.
