Environmental Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) for Noise, Local Air Quality, and Climate Change
The Tenth Meeting of the Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP/10) in February recommended to amend Annex 16, Volume I —
Aircraft Noise in order to keep the environmental Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) up to date and relevant. The Secretariat progressed the amendments to Annex 16, Volume I, through the Air Navigation Commission (ANC) review process, and it is expected that the Council will consider the amendments for adoption in early 2017.
The
Environmental Technical Manual (ETM) —
Procedures for the Noise Certification of Aircraft (Doc 9501, Volume I) was updated and submitted for publication.
CAEP continued to support the development of a recommendation on a supersonic noise standard for enroute and local airport noise. The Assembly recognized that the airworthiness certification of a supersonic aeroplane could occur in the 2020-2025 timeframe.
A new non-volatile Particulate Matter (nvPM) Standard was recommended by CAEP/10 as an amendment to Annex 16, Volume II —
Aircraft Engine Emissions. Once adopted by the Council, this Standard will apply to all turbofan and turbojet engines with rated thrust greater than 26.7kN and for which the date of manufacture of the individual engine is on or after 1 January 2020. Further amendments to Annex 16, Volume II were also recommended to keep the environmental SARPs up to date and relevant. The Secretariat progressed the amendments to Annex 16, Volume II, through the ANC review process, and it is expected that the Council will consider the amendments for adoption in early 2017. The
Environmental Technical Manual (ETM) —
Procedures for the Emissions Certification of Aircraft Engines (Doc 9501, Volume II) was updated and submitted for publication.
A new aeroplane CO2 emissions certification Standard was recommended by CAEP/10 for inclusion in a new Volume of Annex 16 (Annex 16, Volume III —
Aeroplane CO2 Emissions). This Standard will apply to new aeroplane type designs from 2020 and to aeroplane type designs that are in production in 2023 and undergo a change, with a production cut-off in 2028, unless the designs are modified to comply with the Standard. The Secretariat progressed the new Standard through the ANC review process, and it is expected that the Council will consider Annex 16, Volume III, for adoption in early 2017. The
Environmental Technical Manual (ETM) —
Procedures for the CO2 Emissions Certification of Aeroplanes (Doc 9501, Volume III) was developed to support the implementation of the CO2 Standard and will be published in early 2017.
