Global Priorities — All Strategic Objectives — Training and Capacity-building — Aviation Medical Examiner Course

Aviation Medical Examiner Course

The Aviation Medicine for Medical Examiners and Assessors training course is currently under development, a collaborative project between the ICAO Global Aviation Training (GAT) Office, the Singapore Aviation Academy (SAA) and ICAO’s Aviation Medicine Section (MED).

Following the Germanwings flight accident in 2015, ICAO began a review of current Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) guidance material relating to mental health assessment and the identification of possible gaps in the current mental assessment framework. The project is due for completion by March 2017 with the following expected operational outcomes: development of guidance material to enhance the relationship between AMEs and licence holders; development of guidance material to identify significant mental factors that could affect flight safety; increased reporting of health concerns by the licence holder to the AME; and improved management of mental health concerns by the AME (maintaining medical confidentiality while at the same time promoting flight safety).
