Carbon Inventory and Climate Neutral Initiative

ICAO Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory

As part of the United Nations initiative to achieve climate neutrality throughout the UN system, ICAO updated its carbon inventory in 2015 and estimated the Secretariat’s carbon footprint for 2014 using the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Greenhouse Gas Emissions Calculator as well as ICAO’s Carbon Emissions Calculator (CEC).

The total annual ICAO carbon footprint was computed as approximately 6 200 metric tonnes of CO2, with air travel and electricity consumption accounting for most of the emissions.

Climate Neutrality and UN Goals

The ICAO Secretariat provided support to the climate neutrality of the UN Sustainable Development Goals Summit held in 2015, by calculating the emissions from air travel related to the Summit using the ICAO CEC.

The ICAO Secretariat also supported the climate neutrality of official missions of the UN Secretary-General, the Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General (EOSG) and the Climate Change Support Team (CCST) staff for the period from 2011 to 2015.
