ICAO Holds Initial Meeting on New Volcanic Ash Contingency Plan

ICAO is furthering progress on the development of an internationally-harmonized safety risk management framework to provide for the safety of air transport operations in airspace contaminated by volcanic ash.

The European and North Atlantic Regional office of ICAO will host a preparatory meeting tomorrow to begin the process of amending the regional volcanic ash contingency plan following the unprecedented disruptions caused by the recent eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano on 14 April.

Stakeholders from the air transport and scientific communities will lay the basis for a more comprehensive meeting on 8-10 June, with the objective of delivering a revised North Atlantic Volcanic Ash Contingency Plan by 14 June.

The results of the meeting will be incorporated into the work of the International Volcanic Ash Task Force established by the Council of ICAO on 29 April 2010.
