MONTRÉAL, 17 SEPTEMBER 2015 – The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) successfully concluded its Global Aviation Partnerships on Emissions Reductions or ‘E-GAP’ Seminar today, at its Headquarters in Montréal.
The event successfully highlighted how partnerships are essential to global climate action, and assist in strengthening and improving a wide range of ICAO environmental initiatives including aircraft technology, operational improvements, alternative fuels and carbon markets, as well as ICAO’s important role in providing assistance and capacity building. It also addressed aircraft recycling and life-cycle aspects from an environmental perspective.
ICAO Secretary General, Dr. Fang Liu, stressed that partnerships are key to achieving environmental sustainability, and that ICAO “needs to engage and promote synergies to realize more effective climate action. Aviation is learning from other sectors as well, and sharing our own experiences and best practices where applicable, but from an overall standpoint this seminar has helped to underline that we will continue to see our most positive environmental protection results by working towards them together.”
In relation to carbon markets, the Seminar provided a practical opportunity to observe carbon trading through software demonstrations, and the UNFCCC provided a live demonstration on their new web platform: Climate Neutral Now, which is expected to be officially launched in New York on 22 September. Climate Neutral Now will be linked to the ICAO Carbon Calculator for the quantification of air travel carbon emissions.
The Closing Panel of the E-GAP Seminar featured questions to high-level representatives from States, Industry, UN bodies and NGOs on their expectations of the global climate change process towards COP21 and beyond, and on the role of international aviation towards global and effective action on climate change.
The Closing Panel also showcased the more than 1,000 partners who are contributing directly and indirectly today, through ICAO, to help mitigate aviation emissions.
