Farid Zizi appointed President of ICAO Air Navigation Commission

MONTRÉAL, 12 December 2013 − The Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has unanimously appointed Commissioner Farid Zizi  to a one-year term as President of the ICAO Air Navigation Commission (ANC), the UN civil aviation Standards Organization’s main technical body. Zizi was nominated for the appointment by France and his mandate begins on 1 January 2014.

Zizi has served as a Commissioner of the ICAO ANC since 2010. Prior to this, he headed the Education and Research activities for France’s École Nationale de l’Aviation Civile (ENAC), its national civil aviation training organization, managing more than 1,600 students and 6,000 trainees per year. Zizi was also involved in Europe’s SESAR research programme and served as Chairman of the EUROCONTROL Advisory Group for Air Traffic Management (ATM) training, after having led ENAC’s ATM development efforts.

Earlier in his career, Zizi had been in charge of operational and technical requirements and the maintenance operations relating to ATM systems for French Airports and Area Control Centres (ACCs) under France’s Air Navigation Service Provider, DSNA (Direction des Services de la Navigation Aérienne).  He also worked as Deputy Director of France’s Bordeaux ACC and had been in charge of the European activities and the French-Italian ATM coordination plan.

As an Air Navigation Commissioner at ICAO, Zizi has been active most recently in coordinating ANC efforts to organize the 12th Air Navigation Conference which produced the revised 2013-2028 Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP). The revised Global Plan was approved by the ICAO Council and endorsed by the 38th ICAO Assembly earlier this year.

As part of his new duties as President of the ANC, Zizi will  follow up on the Global Plan’s implementation and continued evolution, roll out the adapted Panel structure and organize the deliverables to be ready for the Block 1 mandate amongst other technical programmes.
