Overview

Sustainable aviation is a driver for economic development, trade and tourism. Air transportation is instrumental in facilitating humanitarian and disaster response to crises and public health emergencies. For all States and in particular countries in special situations, such as small island developing States (SIDS), aviation represents an essential lifeline to connect to the world. A poorly funded and neglected aviation industry, which does not meet international requirements adopted by ICAO, has been proven to raise risks and barriers for the sustainable development of States. Focusing on the prioritization and financing for development of sustainable air transport systems in these States has the potential to unlock the benefits sustainable aviation generates.

Objective

This Aviation Partnerships for Sustainable Development (APSD) initiative supports Member States in achieving commitments made in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Samoa Pathway. The workshop aims to unveil these international frameworks where sustainable aviation is prioritized and encourage dialogue and action to raise sustainable air transport as priority for sustainable development and investment among the following: airlines, airports, air navigation service providers, manufacturers, fuel suppliers, ground service and transportation providers, industry suppliers of products and services, travel and tourism companies, civil aviation authorities, chambers of commerce, government representatives, aviation regulators, industry trade associations, environmental groups and civil society.

Outcome

Participants will have a clear understanding of the inter-linkages between the different UN framework and how these benefit sustainable aviation for all ICAO Member States and in particular SIDS. In addition, State representatives had the opportunity to talk with industries and donors about the status of air transport in their respective countries.
