DIRECTORS GENERAL OF CIVIL AVIATION FROM THE STATES OF THE ICAO EUROPEAN AND NORTH ATLANTIC REGIONS, INDUSTRY STAKEHOLDERS, AND INTERNATIONAL AND REGIONAL ORGANIZATIONS COMMIT TO SUPPORTING ICAO'S REGIONAL WORK PROGRAMME FOR THE CURRENT TRIENNIUM

 

Paris, 5 May 2017 – Directors General of Civil Aviation from the States of the ICAO European and North Atlantic Regions, industry stakeholders, and international and regional organizations gathered in Paris, France, today, for its very first ICAO DGCA meeting of the ICAO European and North Atlantic Regions.

The Meeting, chaired by Mr. Patrick Gandil, Director General of Civil Aviation of France, gathered participants from 42 States and 11 international organizations.

The Secretary General, Dr. Fang Liu, in opening the event, highlighted that the DGCA meetings provide an excellent opportunity to review and exchange information on the latest issues of interest in civil aviation and to enhance the coordination of activities in order to achieve pertinent efficiencies of scale while avoiding duplication of effort.

In urging States to continue their support of the ICAO Paris Office's Work Programme for the current triennium which was based on the ICAO 39th Assembly's agreements to ensure a harmonized and coordinated regional implementation of ICAO Global Plans in the fields of Aviation Safety, Air Navigation as well as Aviation Security and Environmental Protection, Dr. Fang Liu highlighted the historical leadership of the European and North Atlantic Regions in making innovations in civil aviation.

"We'll be looking forward to much of the same in the months and years ahead as you continue to demonstrate this leadership, as well as to your help in generating the political will in your States for the important investments and commitments and inter-regional co-ordination that our continued success will require."

In his address to the meeting, the ICAO Regional Director, Europe and North Atlantic, Mr. Luis Fonseca de Almeida stressed "we do believe that, providing you (the Directors General) with this new opportunity (EURNAT DGCA meeting) will make our civil aviation system stronger and more successful at state and regional levels".

The Directors General of Civil Aviation overviewed the roles and responsibilities of ICAO's EUR/NAT Regional Office in Paris, its Work Programme for the current triennium as well activities related to the Regional Projects within ICAO's No Country Left Behind initiative, and agreed to support its activities.
