Amendment 36 to Annex 6, Part I, provides clarification on provisions to fit lightweight cockpit audio recording systems to turbine-engine aeroplanes of maximum certified take-off mass of over 2 250 kg up to and including 5 700 kg required to be operated by more than one pilot, engaged in commercial international air transport operations. The amendment also introduces high-frequency underwater locator beacons (ULBs) with an extended operating life of 90 days and low-frequency ULBs with improved signal range.

The accidents that prompted the recommendation for an alternate power source to power the CVR for a 10 minute recording duration have identified that 10 minutes is enough to record the needed information.
