Summary

Mallee jet fuel: a viable pathway for Australian aviation

Future Farm Industries CRC just published a report on mallee jet fuel sustainability and life-cycle assessment, which provides enough evidence to support continued R&D on mallee production and bio-oil upgrading, and to inform the business case for commercial production starting in Western Australia.

The report closes a two years study carried out with funding from Airbus and support from industry partners Virgin Australia, Renewable Oil Corporation, Dynamotive and IFPEN.

The sustainability and life-cycle analysis covered the growing and harvesting of the mallee tree and its conversion into aviation grade biofuel via the pyrolysis thermal and upgrading processes developed by Dynamotive and IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN). The study shows that a 40% emissions reduction on a life cycle basis can be achieved for mallee jet fuel supllied at Perth airport.
