ICAO Air Navigation Commission Commemorates 200th Session

The ICAO Air Navigation Commission Chamber at ICAO Headquarters in Montréal, Canada. ANC experts are nominated and selected for their technical knowledge, and are not considered to be representing their home States when serving as Commissioners. The same is true for the experts from States and industry who serve on its many technical panels.

MONTRÉAL, 5 NOVEMBER 2015 – The Air Navigation Commission (ANC) of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), an integral component of the framework which has realized over 12,000 international Standards and Recommended Practices supporting the international air transport network since 1944, celebrated its landmark 200th session today in a special ceremony.

“Since it was first established, the ICAO Air Navigation Commission has been an integral component of how States and industry find common ground, through ICAO, on their most pressing technical challenges,” remarked ICAO Council President Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu. “On the occasion of its 200th session, I am honoured to acknowledge the history and contributions of the ANC on behalf of ICAO and all its Member States.”

ANC President Mr. Farid Zizi used the occasion of the ANC’s 200th Session to present Mr. Robert Butcher, of Airservices Australia, with the seventh Walter Binaghi Air Navigation Commission Laurel Award. Mr. Butcher was recognized for his leadership and technical contribution to the ICAO/ANC Separation and Airspace Safety Panel (SASP), which he has chaired since 2001, and for driving the realization of practical and comprehensive airspace monitoring arrangements in ICAO’s Asia-Pacific Region.

“The achievements of the ANC rely heavily on the commitments and contributions of the individuals and organizations that make up our community,” stressed Mr. Zizi. “It is our great pleasure therefore to recognize Rob Butcher today for this prestigious award, but I would also wish to extend my personal gratitude to every technical expert who has served the ANC over the last 70 years, and without whose dedication its work would not have been possible.”
