The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) is an alliance of 26 countries from North America and Europe committed to fulfilling the goals of the North Atlantic Treaty signed in Washington on 4 April 1949. In accordance with the Treaty, the fundamental role of NATO is to safeguard the freedom and security of its member countries by political and military means.is a political-military alliance that brings together 28 member countries from Europe and North America to cooperate in the field of security and defence. Established in 1949, the Alliance promotes democratic values, the rule of law and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. NATO works closely with other international organizations and non-member countries in areas ranging from conflict prevention, peacekeeping, combating terrorism and new security threats, through defence planning and reform, to disaster-response, air defence and civil-military Air Traffic Management (ATM) and security-related scientific and environmental cooperation. NATO played a key role in stabilizing the Balkans and is leading peacekeeping efforts in Afghanistan.
As the senior civil-military NATO body with responsibility for ATM, the NATO Air Traffic Management Committee (NATMC) is charged with the production, dissemination, monitoring and enforcement of NATO ATM policy, standards and guidance. The NATMC meetings increasingly present a global forum for coordination, gathering civil and military senior ATM experts and airspace users from over 60 nations of North America, Europe, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East. In pursuance of NATMC objectives, collaboration and cooperation with relevant international aviation organizations is essential. ICAO has been a member of the NATMC since its inception in 1954 and representatives of IATA, European Commission, Eurocontrol and many others support the NATMC in the achievement of its tasks.
